Fixed Braces vs. Removable Braces

Has your dentist told you that you need to get braces? If yes, then the next question playing on your mind could be – which type of braces should you go for? Well, there are many types of braces out there, depending on the composition material (metal, ceramic, invisalign, lingual, etc.). But before, we get to the different types of braces, you need to first decide if you want to go for removable braces or fixed braces.

Both removable and fixed braces have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. In this article, we will explore the pros and cons of these braces to help you decide what is best for you.

Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are recommended for serious teeth alignment issues. The results of using fixed braces are visible sooner than that of removable braces. So, if your dentist asks you to go for fixed braces, then don’t get disappointed as you will have to wear them only for a short span of time. Fixed braces enable precise tooth movements to give you better and long lasting results. The use of brackets in fixed braces ensures that the appliance works for every movement of your teeth. So, you see how fixed braces work closely with your teeth to give you a beautiful smile. However, if you have a minor dental issue, then you might want to consider removable braces for the job.

When it comes to the cost, fixed braces tend to be pricier than the removable ones. Having said that, the fixed braces take lesser time to straighten your teeth compared to the removable braces. So, the longer the duration of your treatment, the more money you have to shell out. The best way to go about it is to identify the total year on year cost for both options and determine the duration of the treatment for them.

Removable Braces

Removable braces are mainly used to fix minor issues with tooth alignment. They are easy to use as you can remove them while eating and brushing. They can be a good option for correcting problems related to the front teeth. Removable braces usually consist of plastic aligners that are attached to your teeth and force them to move in the desired direction. Invisalign is a type of clear aligner that you can use instead of metal or damon braces. Both fixed and removable braces can be discreet and hence less embarrassing.  Having said that, which option would work best for you depends on your dental issue and the amount you are willing to spend on your orthodontic treatment.
