5 Things You Must Not Do Before Tooth Extraction

When the time has come for your teeth to go, it has to go, or your smile will be half-hearted. The pulling out of teeth from its socket due to varied reasons is called tooth extraction. A dentist pulls teeth out either due to worsening pain from harmful tooth decay or trauma to teeth. There are other reasons, too from the premise and angle of alignment of teeth. Here, if the teeth are oversized for your mouth or if the teeth are penetrating your gums that can cause pain and discomforting irritations, you have to go in for a tooth removal. There is a concise list of don’ts that have to be taken care of before tooth extraction as follows.

1) Eating or Drinking

Basic pre-extraction practice should be to not eat or drink eight to twelve hours before tooth extraction. If the dentist injects the dental patient with a local anaesthetic, they can eat or drink one to two hours prior to tooth extraction; however cleaning the teeth before showing up in the dental clinic by soft brushing and gentle flossing of the teeth, should be attended to.

2) Smoking

This might be a given, but it is a strict rule not to smoke twelve hours before the tooth extraction. Smoking can cause complications during the tooth extraction process. The same rule applies to tobacco consumption in any form.

3) Talk To The Dentist

A qualified dentist will give you all the information you need about the tooth extraction procedure such as local or general anaesthetic application, the procedure details like equipment or tools used, for instance, if sterilized or new, the time you’ll take to recover, post-extraction details and so on, but you may feel anxiety. This is because you are not ready. Inform your dentist aptly about the medications you are on for other ailments, prescriptions by other doctors that you are taking, health plans, formal or subscribed diet plans, current treatments, mental illness, trauma, any questions the answers to which will make you feel confident enough to go through the oral operation, and so on.

4) Dress and Miscellaneous Things to Consider

Do not wear jewellery like precious ornaments. You may have to take them off before the tooth extraction. Avoid wearing contact lenses cos the local injection to sedate the tooth area may keep you dizzy a bit so you may have to shut your eyes momentarily. Do not wear lip balm, lipstick, and makeup. Be aware not to put on tight clothes. Wear loose and comfortable clothes, however, also keep in mind the air-conditioning in the dental clinic rooms. Keep your hair propped up and away from your face or to prevent dangling at and around the mouth. Do not spray perfumes, body sprays and colognes. The scents may cause discomfort for the attendants in the dental room where the tooth extraction will be performed. It can also irritate or cause scratching, which will delay the dental procedure.
